Luke 2:11
For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.

This is one of my favorite verses in the bible, regardless of the season. The reason that it is, is because it proclaims the greatest news ever told to all of mankind. In this verse about a Baby born, we also have a theology in miniature.

First, He is a Savior, which is expressed in His name, Jesus. Joseph was told to name the Baby Jesus, which means Savior. Only Jesus can save you from your sins. There is no other name given unto men by which you shall be saved.(Acts 4:12) He is the Savior of mankind.
Second, He is Christ, the Anointed of God, the Messiah of Israel.
Third, He is the Lord, God manifest in the flesh, our Immanuel.

I would like to focus on the first attribute of Jesus mentioned in this verse, which is Savior. That name alone is the Gospel. He came to save “whosoever will” repent and believe in Him. The first line in the verse “For unto you” makes it very personal. What great news that night and today, because we desperately needed a Savior. The Bible says our sins have separated us from God, and there is nothing we can do to bring or get ourselves back to God. Jesus is our substitute. He stood in our place and did something we could never do, and that is satisfy the justice of a Holy and righteous God. By doing so, He saves us from our sin, from the power of sin, and from the wrath of God. For that reason, let us praise His name this Christmas, because He is the Savior, Christ the Lord!
